The influence of Bollywood on Indian fashion: Iconic movie styles and how to recreate them

Mumbai-based Bollywood, sometimes referred to as "Bollywood," has had a long-standing impact on Indian culture and daily life. In this nation, films are a staple of entertainment and are nearly a religion.

Attending an Indian wedding will reveal the ladies wearing attire from the Bollywood film industry. During the "baraat," partygoers dance to upbeat popular music.

For many years, Bollywood has had a significant impact on popular Indian fashion. Any costume worn by an actor or actress in a popular film will be promptly recreated by tailors.

How have movie trends influenced Indian fashion?

40s and 50s:- Bollywood's style throughout the Second World War and the war for independence was conservative, formal, and subtle. In rural areas, males typically wore dhotis and women typically wore ghagra-cholis. In the few films with urban people, European dress was crucial. Meenakumari, Nargis Dutt, and Suraiya, for instance, wore tasteful sarees and sharp outfits. For the first time, trousers with puffy sleeves were seen on film. The hair was styled in elegant buns, and pearls were a mainstay of jewellery.

1960s and 1970s:- The 1960s are most remembered for Madhubala's anarkali kurtas in Mughal-e-Azam, Mumtaz's distinctive saree drape in Brahmachari, and Sadhana's popular fringed haircut.

In that decade, men wore sweaters over their shoulders, a style Shahrukh Khan imitated in Mohabbatein years later. Bollywood fashion of the 1960s was characterised by short, tight shirts, exposed skin, and striking makeup. Winged eyeliner and big puffy hair were in style. In Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, a 1960s costume designer named Bhanu Athaiya began experimenting with cinematic attire.

As colour films grew more prevalent, on-screen fashion included a wide variety of hues, patterns, and avant-garde outfits. Since Dimple Kapadia wore them in her 1973 hit, Bobby, bell bottoms, cropped shirts, huge spectacles, platform shoes, and polka dots have all become prominent fashion trends. For the first time ever, bikinis, crop tops, and swimwear could be seen on television.
